About Samar State University
Samar State University (SSU) is a public higher education institution located in Samar, Philippines. Founded in 1912 as Samar Trade School, it initially served as a laboratory shop for Samar Provincial High School. It evolved into a secondary trade school, holding its first graduation in 1932. In 1959, it was converted by law into Samar School of Arts and Trades (SSAT), authorized to offer two-year technical vocational courses. It later expanded to offer four-year degree programs, including Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education (BSIE) and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology (BSIT). Today, SSU is described as an educational landmark vital to Samar province, providing opportunities for higher education to support vocational proficiency and individual and national development. The university engages in extensive academic, research, and community extension activities. It offers programs across multiple colleges and disciplines, including teacher education, engineering, technology, fisheries, and medical education through its Samar Island Institute of Medicine (SIIM). SSU actively participates in research, innovation, and sustainability initiatives, such as ranking highly in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings and hosting conferences like iPOVCON focused on technology-driven poverty alleviation. It maintains partnerships with government agencies like DOST, international universities, and local governments for community development projects. The university also operates DYSY 102.9 University Radio and has a New Student Center among its infrastructure.
